Robert Burns Birthplace Museum is the ideal place to discover both the man and his work. This flagship museum encompasses sites across the village of Alloway, taking you from open-air tributes to landmark building from the bards life. Step inside the humble cottage where Burns was born, visit the museum filled with his personal belongings the handwritten manuscripts, and venture into the famous setting for his greatest work, Tam o'Shanter.Accessibility
The main museum doors are all push pad or automatic, the main museum is all on one level. The museum gardens and Monument gardens are all level and have good hard surfaces. The Brig o' Doon is cobbled. The Auld Kirk has 5 steps to entrance to the grave yard. Burns cottage is connected to the main Museum by Poet's Path, a 10 minute walk or we run a free automated buggy between the sites most days, the buggy stop is still a 2-3 minute walk from the Cottage. There are also parking facilities at Burns Cottage. Burns Cottage has level access apart from one room in the cottage which is cobbled but still manageable to most wheelchairs. We have wheelchairs available at the Cottage and the museum for visitors to borrow. We are running accessible openings, 1st Tuesday of every month, 3pm – 5pm. Robert Burns Birthplace Museum – interactive screens and sound effects will be switched off, and cleaning lights will be switched on. Burns Cottage – sound effects will be switched off. Essential carers are free. While we cannot necessarily guarantee that this will be a quiet time from a visitor number point of view, visitors who find the usual lighting and audio levels of the museum challenging may wish to visit during these hours.
