Overview
On a recent visit to London as a wheelchair user I found the majority of London streets & pavements were very wheelchair friendly & easily accessible. We visited the London Eye & had a great experience. My husband got the tickets while I waited & viewed the Thames & river traffic. I paid for my ticket & my husband got for free as my carer/companion. After being on the London Eye we had chips in the cafe, I was easily placed at a suitable table with staff being very considerate. The whole visit was an enjoyable experience.
Transport & Parking
We didn’t have to look for parking etc as we were walking & I was in my electric wheelchair so I don’t know what is available.
Access
There is a ramp which goes up to where you join the wheel. This was easily manageable in my electric wheelchair & I would think would be ok for someone to push up a normal wheelchair. Once at the top the entry into the gondola was easy. The very capable staff momentarily stopped the wheel, put down a small portable ramp & I wheeled myself into the gondola . There was plenty of room inside for the wheelchair & was able to position myself into a good spot. I could also move around as the wheel moved around getting an all round great view of London!
Toilets
Obviously there are no toilets in the gondola on the London Eye itself but I did use the toilet in the building on the London Eye pier. There were adequate handrails, an emergency red cord & it was big enough for a wheelchair & a carer. It was also clean.
Staff
The staff we met were very helpful & friendly. They were very able in positioning the ramp & for stopping the wheel. I felt very safe & well looked after.
