Overview
A well-modernized gallery with a good collection of 19th century paintings, including paintings which reflect local life and industry on Tyneside. Fully accessible.
Transport & Parking
Can't comment on the parking. The Metro system is fully accessible and the gallery is about five minutes on foot (and on the the level) from Monument Station. Local buses all have manually operated ramps and the drivers we encountered were very helpful.
Access
Good - lift to all levels, and a spacious cafe and shop. The main entrance has automatic doors. Most of the galleries are big and easy to get round, and the attendants are very helpful in opening the heavy swing doors.
Toilets
There's one accessible loo in the Marble Hall, and another which is accessed by going through the cafe.
Staff
Friendly and helpful
Anything else you wish to tell us?
Most of the pictures are hung at a level which means that a wheelchair user can enjoy them without getting a crick in the neck. They have made a real effort to provide some tactile displays for people with visual limitations, including braille captions. The announcements in the lift are (very) loud and clear.
