Ten years since MS came into our lives - MS Awareness Week

We asked our Ambassadors, Karine and Sarah, if they would reflect on living with MS for MS Awareness Week. Karine was diagnosed with PPMS ten years ago, and she lives in Edinburgh with her wife Sarah who is her full-time carer.

It’s MS awareness week and as Ambassadors for Euan’s Guide, we’re proud to share our story. We can’t believe it has been 10 years since MS came into our lives.

So much has changed in these 10 years; new disease-modifying treatments have been discovered, stem cell treatment is showing promising results, and there is even a drug for primary progressive MS (PPMS) if you are at the beginning of that journey, and, importantly, the MS community is so strong.

While the last ten years of living with MS have been hard and challenged us both daily, we’re in it together and try to see something positive in every single day.

We became involved with Euan’s Guide when we struggled to find accessible things to do - we were introduced to one of the team members by a mutual friend, and we quickly became passionate supporters of the charity which led to us becoming Ambassadors.

An interesting issue with MS is that every single person will have different experiences and different access needs. Euan’s Guide is a great resource for us because, as Karine’s mobility has changed, we have been able to continue to use the website to find great places to go, filtering by our different needs to narrow down the venues.

This has given us the confidence to live our lives to the fullest while navigating our way through life with MS. Whether we’re exploring castles, trying lovely new foods, doing an accessible zip line (never again, all challenges will be ground-related from now on) or bounding across the sand on a beach wheelchair at North Berwick, we know adventure awaits us for the next ten years!
